Chizabam Turns Survival Into Soul on ‘To Survive’
This one is a banger. Chizabam’s “To Survive” moves at a deliberate pace over a slow, bluesy foundation. It pairs smooth guitar with a soulful hook that immediately gives the song a feel good vibe. It carries the warmth of an older record, without sounding stuck in the past. I can hear UGK in my head on the beat.
The turntable scratches between verses add just enough classic hip-hop texture. Those scratches return near the end, helping the song feel connected to an era when DJs were part of the storytelling instead of just decoration. Nothing in the beat feels overcrowded. It gives Chizabam room to talk.
Lyrically, “To Survive” is less of a victory lap than a look back at what it took to make it through. Chizabam revisits adolescence, street decisions, school, hustling, friendships, loss and the consequences that linger after those moments are over. Memories of trying to move CDs, coming out of high school already caught up in adult choices, fights, police, people who are no longer around and the realization that the decisions made as a teenager can shape an entire future.
That makes the hook hit harder. When Chizabam comes back to the idea that he “did what I did to survive,” it doesn’t feel like an excuse or a celebration. It feels more like an honest attempt to understand the person he had to become in his environment.
“I got trauma in my story… I got trauma in my glory… I got trauma and it’s okay. I did what I did to survive.”
His delivery is a big reason the writing works well. Chizabam has a poetic, conversational approach that lets the details breathe. There’s weight in his voice when he touches on grief, fear, family and the realization of how short life can be, but he never forces the emotion. The vulnerability feels natural because it comes through the memories themselves. Instead of telling the listener how to feel, he gives enough detail for you to understand why those moments stayed with him.
That approach fits the artist behind the record. Chizabam is an Atlanta-born, Dallas-based rapper, producer and storyteller whose music sits between Southern rap, soul and lyrical testimony. Raised between a Nigerian father’s discipline and a Louisiana mother’s fire, his writing pulls heavily from memory, faith, loss and the realities of Black life. “To Survive” also works as a strong introduction to the ideas behind his forthcoming album, Trauma For Sale, a project centered on what survival costs and what people continue carrying long after the original moment has passed.
On a purely musical level, this is one I’d bump in the whip. The groove is smooth enough to ride to, but the writing has enough detail to reward another listen once you start catching the individual stories.
