Freidrich$ Takes Listeners on a Strange Emotional Ride With "I Am the Prince of Darkness"

When I first came across *I Am the Prince of Darkness* by Freidrich$, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Between the title and the corpse paint on the cover, I figured I was in for something dark and aggressive. What I actually got was something completely different.

This 11-track project is a strange mix of hip-hop, indie pop, acoustic music, and what I can only describe as sad-boy vibes. It's definitely not your typical rap project, and I'll admit, this particular style of music is pretty unfamiliar to me. But I'm always open to hearing something different.

With that being said, this was a pretty rough listen at times.

Right out of the gate, "And It's You" had me scratching my head. The vocals sound like they could've benefited from a pop filter, and the harmonies don't quite line up the way they should. I found myself wondering where exactly the artist was trying to take me. Not necessarily because the music was different, but because the execution felt so unpolished.

"Never Get Old" didn't do much to change that impression. The production feels pretty basic, and the singing struggles to stay on key. By the time I got to "Enchantment," I started noticing another issue that would pop up throughout the project: the timing. Some of the bars don't land where you'd expect them to, almost as if the artist isn't fully locked into the beat. The melodies on the hook weren't really doing it for me either.

"Shimmy Yay" was one of those tracks where I could actually hear what Freidrich$ was going for. I liked some of the melodies, and there's a fun idea buried in there. Unfortunately, the singing and vocal layering still need work. Sometimes the harmonies feel more like they're competing with each other than working together.

Things started looking up a little with "In Reverse." I actually really enjoyed the beat on this one. The lyrics weren't bad either, although the timing was still an issue. I also liked how the track ended. With a tighter vocal performance, I think this could've been one of the better songs on the project.

"Yours" switches things up with an acoustic sound that I appreciated. It was a nice change of pace and gave me a better idea of just how far outside the traditional hip-hop box Freidrich$ is willing to go.

**Then the project started making a little more sense to me.**

As I got deeper into the extended version, particularly around tracks seven and eight, I started looking at the music differently. These songs feel extremely personal, almost like Freidrich$ is just letting his emotions spill out over the instrumentals. At times, I even wondered if he was freestyling rather than writing everything down beforehand.

The music gets pretty depressing, but there's also something genuine about it. I started realizing that maybe this project wasn't meant to be a collection of traditional songs at all. Maybe it's more of an audio journey through whatever this artist has been feeling.

And I can respect that.

The problem is that the technical issues don't go away just because the music is emotional.

Track nine was especially difficult for me to get through. There are moments where the vocals are layered in a way that makes it sound like two different verses are playing at the same time. Some of the overlapping vocals don't even seem to be saying the same words. It becomes distracting and takes away from whatever message the artist is trying to get across.

Track ten has another beat that I really enjoyed. It's smooth, sultry, and fits the sad atmosphere of the project perfectly. Unfortunately, the singing didn't do the production any favors. There were some pretty noticeable pitch issues that made this one particularly challenging to listen to.

But the biggest surprise came on the final track.

For most of the song, we're getting more of the same: unconventional singing, random falsetto humming in the background, and vocals that could use some tightening up. Interestingly enough, some of the melodies weren't bad.

Then, around the 2:50 mark, something happened that genuinely caught my attention.

When Freidrich$ starts singing, "I've been living in my shadow," the vocals suddenly sound noticeably better. The harmonies are more in sync, the delivery feels more natural, and everything starts coming together.

I actually sat up in my seat because I wasn't expecting that.

It made me wonder if some of the roughness throughout the project was intentional. Was he purposely creating something that sounds this raw and imperfect? Or was that final moment simply an example of what he's capable of when everything clicks?

I can't say for sure, but I found it interesting.

Final Thoughts

I'm going to keep it real. *I Am the Prince of Darkness* wasn't an easy project for me to get through, and there's quite a bit of room for improvement.

The biggest areas that need attention are the vocal performances, mixing, harmonies, and overall timing. I'd strongly encourage Freidrich$ to spend more time developing his recording techniques and possibly work with an experienced engineer or vocal producer. Even something as simple as making sure vocal layers are properly aligned could make a huge difference.

But I also don't want to completely dismiss what he's doing here.

There are some good beats, a few interesting melodies, and moments where the emotion feels authentic. And even though this isn't necessarily my kind of music, I can see how somebody who enjoys experimental, lo-fi, and emotionally vulnerable music might connect with it.

One thing I will give Freidrich$ credit for is that he certainly doesn't sound like he's trying to be everybody else. He's doing his own thing, and in an industry where so many artists sound alike, individuality is worth something.

**My biggest piece of advice would be to keep that individuality, but work on the fundamentals.** Being experimental doesn't mean the vocals can't be properly mixed, the harmonies can't be in tune, or the delivery can't be tighter.

There's a difference between sounding raw on purpose and sounding unfinished.

At the end of the day, this is one of those projects that reminds me just how broad the world of music really is. It might not be my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean there isn't an audience out there for it.

Freidrich$ clearly has his own artistic identity. Now it's about improving the execution so the music can better reflect whatever he's trying to express.
